Sergeant 1696
The Sergeant is armed with the Halberd, and should be of good height, alert, plus read and write well. The Captain has the power to create sergeants in his company, he must choose those of his soldiers whom he knows to be the bravest, the wisest, and the most vigilant to carry out these duties. The sergeant is usually a soldier who has passed through the ranks of lanspassandes, or corporal. The first sergeant is to keep a record of the soldiers in the company, and their lodgings. It is up to the sergeants to have a role for the soldiers, and to visit them night and morning. Likewise, he arranges the company putting the best-armed and most vigorous in the front line, making them observe military discipline, and all kinds of command given by their officers. He calls the soldiers by their names on the day of the service, which he usually does in the absence of the officers, and records those missing from the Guards.
