Wells, September 22, 1685

An account of the 543 men awaiting this bloody Assize Court of Judge Jeffreys and those Martyred on this day.

My lord,

The Assize court finds over 543 awaiting sentencing in this place. Only one man, William Mangell has pleaded not guilty. The list of those charged here is:

514 for waging war on the King

9 for aiding and assisting the late Duke of Monmouth

6 for speaking seditious words

10 will call on the Kings general Pardon

Poor Mangell was convicted of High Treason in moments and shall hang later today. The rest have been found guilty and 99 will be executed the rest transported. The word is that the King will give 850 men to his friends for sale as slaves into the sugar plantations in the Americas. We expect any day the final list of those named to die from the King.

Today there were more executions in Wareham and will send a separate list of those martyred. The Wells Assize will conclude today or tomorrow, with so great a number pleading ‘guilty’ there has been only the one case put before the jury.

In my next, I shall give you an account of the sentences as given by the tyrant.

William Savage

Taunton September 21, 1685

An Account of the four martyrs that died at Taunton and the final list of verdicts from the Assize court

My lord,

The Assize court here in Taunton has finished and Lord Chief Justice has left for Bristol. All a while the rest are to move to Wells where a greater number of prisoners wait in the jail.

The following have been Martyred today in Taunton:

Capt. Abraham Annesley, in Monmouth’s Army

William Cooper, joiner of Bridgwater, pleaded not Guilty

William Gatchill, yeoman of Angersleigh, assisted the Rebels

Simon Hamlyn, tailor of Pitminster, pleaded not Guilty, no with Monmouth

The rest have final sentences from the court:

430 are found guilty and await sentence

20 produced the General Pardon

24 await the King’s Pardon

45 where not tried, to be moved to Wells

The guilty now wait for the King to select those to die or be transported. This gossip around the court is that the King has offered 850 rebels to his favourites, to be used a slaves in the sugar plantations. The Assize court is now moving towards Wells, whilst Lord Chief Justice Jeffrey travelled to Bristol yesterday but had no business.

In my next, I shall give an account of the situation at Wells.

Yours in the cause of liberty and property,

William Savage

Taunton, September 19. 1685

A letter from Lord Chief Justice Jeffreys to King James II

Your most gracious Majesty,

I most humbly beseech your Majesty to give me leave to use this opportunity by my lord Churchill, to give your Majesty an account that I have this day finished what was necessary for your Majestys service in this place. I beg leave that your Majesty may be graciously pleased to let me refer to the lord Churchill for the particulars, for I have not yet perfected my papers, so as to be able to do it so exactly as my duty to your Majestys service requires.

I received your Majesty’s commands by my lord Sunderland about the rebels and your Majesty design for transportation. I beseech your Majesty that I may inform you that each prisoner will be worth £10, if not £15 a piece, and that if your Majesty orders them as you have already designed, persons that have not suffered in your service will run away with the booty. I am sure that your Majesty will be continually perplexed with petitions for recompense for sufferers as well as rewards for servants.

Sir, I hope your Majesty will pardon this presumption, I know it is my duty to obey. I have only respited doing anything until I know your Royal pleasure is they should have the men, for upon my allegiance to you, Sir, I shall never trim in my obedience to your commands in all things.

Sir, had not your Majesty been pleased to declare your gracious intentions to them that served you in the soldiery and also to the many distressed families ruined by this late rebellion, I durst not have presumed to give your Majesty this trouble. Sir, I will when I have the honour to kiss your Majesty’s hands humbly acquaint you with all matters your Majesty hath been graciously pleased to entrust me with, and doubt not, Sir, but to be able to propose a way how to gratify all such as your Majesty shall be pleased to think deserving of it, without touching your Exchequer.

Your Majestys most dutiful and obedient subject and servant,

Taunton, September 18. 1685

This being a simple Account of the first day of the Taunton Assize court presided over by Lord Chief Justice Jeffreys

My lord,

It saddens me once more to write of the bloody Assize that is travelling across the Western Counties of England. It is like a plague that spreads death and widows without stopping. I would be lighter, if not that we had now arrived in Taunton. For it is here that the heart of the Green Ribbon Party did beat, is was the home of Protestant fervour and is already a town of husbandless wives and fatherless children. In this most loyal town to the late Duke of Monmouth, Lord Chief Justice Jeffreys will find many willing martyrs to our cause.

It is recorded that the jail holds over 500 men, all to be tried over the next two days. Surely, the whole world can see that no fair justice can be enacted across so many, in such a short period of time. As with the last courts, the first to be heard are those four not prepared to bow their heads, but plead ‘not guilty’ and challenge the tyrant himself. Of these one poor man called Mr Hamlyn, was defended by the Major of Taunton himself as an innocent man. To this the bloody Judge did respond “You have brought him on, if he be innocent, his blood be upon you”, and he shall hang on the Monday.

So after this rough justice, the rest of those brought to the bar plead guilty, yet no more sentences are issued. Some did produce the ‘General Pardon’ but the truth of the matter is that Lord Jeffreys will send the list to the King. For the tyrant himself does pass sentence now and not the court. It is he that will select those to be sold and those to die, he is the giver of a man’s life to others and the taker of lives.

In my next, I shall give you details as to the verdicts and any information I can gain regarding the King’s mood.

Yours in the cause of liberty and property,

William Savage

Sherborne, September 15. 1685

An account of the executions and the names of the martyrs at Sherborne on the orders of Lord Chief Justice Jeffreys

My lord,

At Sherborne were martyred twelve, all of whom died with courage and dignity. Especially, one Mr Glisson of Yeovil. This gentleman demonstrated great deportment and standing at the place of his execution. In so doing, he gave considerable satisfaction to his friends and amazement to our enemies. On the scaffold, he declared to be a true Protestant but for although he had not joined the late Duke of Monmouth army, he now judged it high time for everyone to stand up for the defence of the true religion against the reign of tyrants.

Here is the full list of those martyred in this place and date.

Michael Abbot, cordwainer of Honiton, in Monmouth’s Army

William Alston, in Monmouth’s Army

Samuel Glisson, of Yeovil, a baptist, absent but not with Monmouth

Richard Hall, cordwainer of Colyton, in Monmouth’s Army

William Hart, in Monmouth’s Army

John Lawrence, in Monmouth’s Army

John Leggatt, in Monmouth’s Army

George Puckeridge, of North Petherton, in Monmouth’s Army

Henry Rowe, of Chardstock, in Monmouth’s Army

John Savage, tailor of Colyton, in Monmouth’s Army

Frances Skinner, of Chard,  in Monmouth’s Army

Robert Whorwood, cordwainer of Honiton, in Monmouth’s Army

May their souls rest in peace.

Have enclosed an account of the twelve also martyred on this date at Melcombe Regis & Weymouth

Your loyal and humble servant in the cause of liberty,

William Savage

Exeter, September 14. 1685

This is an Account of the Exeter Assize and the those men Martyred on this day across Devonshire

My lord,

This day in the Exeter Assize court 28 men stood accused of waging war on the King and 13 of other offences. The first three of these brave men three pleaded ‘Not Guilty’ and after the now normal rants of Lord Chief Justice Jeffrey, the jury returned verdicts of ‘Guilty’. After this Judge Jeffrey sentenced them to be executed on this day acoss Devon.

These martyrs to the cause of liberty and the Protestant religion are:

John Foweracres, cordwainer of Honiton who was executed at Exeter
Thomas Broughton, who was executed at Axminster
Thomas Hobbes, who pleaded not Guilty to proclaiming the Duke of Monmouth King but was executed at Crediton

One other, Robert Drower, was returned to jail for want of evidence after he offered to pay for more time.

After this all men pleaded ‘Guilty’ to waging war and received the following sentences:

4 shall be executed in Honiton
2 shall be executed in Ottery St Mary
2 shall be executed in Colyton
1 more shall be executed in Axminster
7 shall be transported by the Mr Nipho for the Queen
2 will be whipped and fined
6 may be offer for the King’s pardon

For those guilty of uttering seditious words against the King, all 11 men will be whipped over the coming day through the streets of Exeter. The two men accused of assisting the escape of Mr Bryant were also fined and shall be whipped.

In my next, I shall give an account of those that shall be executed tomorrow at Sherborne.

Your humble and loyal servant to the cause of liberty and freedom,

William Savage
