The Trooper or Cavalier, is a man who makes a profession of serving on horseback. He must be of mediocre height, both for the ease of riding and so as not to inconvenience him. He must be enlisted at the age of twenty-five to thirty, to be more disciplinable than if he were of a more advanced age. It is important to know the place of his birth, and the quality of his parents, to avoid desertion. He must be of a robust constitution, and naturally love horses, to take special care of them. Therefore, a Cavalier from the county is preferable to one from the cities, where there is more delicacy. He must also be sober, and play as little as possible.
