Dorchester, September 4. 1685
This being a brief account of the opening of the Dorchester Assize where 337 souls are to be tried.
My lord,
The assize court arrived in Dorchester yesterday and today the Grand Jury has been selected and stands ready. I have it on good authority that there are some 335 men and 2 women awaiting the King’s justice in the jail. Many of these have been sent from London and from other parts of the kingdom. This includes a fair number of those that did arrive with his late grace at Lyme in June.
All will be summoned to the bar over the next days, of these over three hundred are accused of High-Treason for waging war on the King. The rest stand for saying seditious words in support for the late Duke of Monmouth or for his lawful right to the succession. All a while, Mr Pollexfen has been busy in the jail, cajoling many to plead ‘Guilty’, yet some 34 are still brave enough in pleading ‘Not Guilty’ and these will all be tried and sentenced tomorrow.
In my next, I will give an account of the first day of judgement in Dorchester, although I fear the butchers bill may be very high indeed.
