An Account of the four martyrs that died at Taunton and the final list of verdicts from the Assize court
My lord,
The Assize court here in Taunton has finished and Lord Chief Justice has left for Bristol. All a while the rest are to move to Wells where a greater number of prisoners wait in the jail.
The following have been Martyred today in Taunton:
Capt. Abraham Annesley, in Monmouth’s Army
William Cooper, joiner of Bridgwater, pleaded not Guilty
William Gatchill, yeoman of Angersleigh, assisted the Rebels
Simon Hamlyn, tailor of Pitminster, pleaded not Guilty, no with Monmouth
The rest have final sentences from the court:
430 are found guilty and await sentence
20 produced the General Pardon
24 await the King’s Pardon
45 where not tried, to be moved to Wells
The guilty now wait for the King to select those to die or be transported. This gossip around the court is that the King has offered 850 rebels to his favourites, to be used a slaves in the sugar plantations. The Assize court is now moving towards Wells, whilst Lord Chief Justice Jeffrey travelled to Bristol yesterday but had no business.
In my next, I shall give an account of the situation at Wells.
Yours in the cause of liberty and property,
William Savage
