Glastonbury, June 22. 1685
Early this morning, Capt. Kidd reported to me that at least one Foot Regiment of the Somerset Militia are blocking our path at Wells. Other reports I have received show that a strong party of the enemy under Lord Churchill are near Ilminster and therefore threaten our flank. Upon this news, the Army is marching early from Bridgwater to Glastonbury, we are sending out strong parties of Horse towards Ilminster and other places to our south to cover our movement, whist are van guard move with pace to Glastonbury with strong out-guards.
I have word of a skirmish between our horse and the enemy under Lord Churchill near Langport, I understand we had the better of the encounter. On reaching Glastonbury, I’m taking two companies of Foot Guards and a Squadron of horse, quickly onto Wells to remove any threat from that quarter. On arrival we arrive discovery that the Militia have already departed this place for Bath. Today, the rain has been heavy in the extreme and the road is exceedingly hard going, especially for the baggage as we crossed the Sedgemoor, which is very low-lying land.
This evening, I took the leader of the Somerset Club-men to meet with his Majesty. They promised that they would join with his Majesties forces and bringing over 2000 well-armed men into our Army tomorrow. His Majesty issued a commission to the leader of Club-men on this information. This night the men have made shelters and great fires to dry their coats but with little success, whilst we are changing our out-guards more regularly as the rain is still heavy.
